I Spent Years Chasing Love That Would Never Choose Me Back—Until I Finally Chose Myself

You know that moment when you look at yourself in the mirror and barely recognize the woman staring back at you? That was me. Years of chasing love, bending over backward to be "enough," and convincing myself that if I just loved harder, things would change—left me exhausted, burnt out, and unrecognizable.

I was a textbook people-pleaser, shaped by a deep-rooted fear of abandonment and rejection. I spent my life waiting on emotionally unavailable men who could never truly love me. Ghosting. Breadcrumbing. Lying. Cheating. Manipulation. I endured it all. And instead of walking away, I fought to keep them. I twisted myself into whatever I thought they needed me to be, believing if I just did more, gave more, or became "better," they would finally choose me.

But they never did. The rare times I did stand up for myself, I was met with rage, shame, and blame.

I learned the hard way that toxic love thrives on silence, and I refused to be silent any longer.

Then one day, something inside me snapped. I left yet another situation where I had been belittled and blamed for standing up for myself and calling out their bad behavior. As I drove home, I let out a scream so raw it felt like it came from my soul.

"No more!"

No more chasing love that hurt me.
No more justifying mistreatment.
No more silencing myself to keep the peace.
No more settling for less than I deserved.

That was the day I stopped waiting to be chosen and began to choose myself.

I Dismantled My Old Life

I vowed that not only would I never allow anyone to treat me that way again, but I wouldn’t even entertain the idea of another relationship until I had become a magnet for the kind of love I truly deserved.

So, I blew up my life.

I walked away from toxic relationships. I quit my soul-sucking job. I left behind a life that was never truly mine. And with nothing but a plane ticket and a three-day homestay booked, I flew across the world to Southeast Asia, where I would spend the next six months reconstructing myself into the woman my soul was calling me to be.

I didn’t have a plan—only an intention.

To finally listen to myself. To find out who I was outside of my trauma, my conditioning, and my old patterns.

The first night, I curled up on the floor of the Bangkok airport, sobbing. The first couple of weeks, I barely left the one-mile radius of my homestay. I was terrified. But then I told myself the truth:

"Girl, you did not come all this way to stay small. Get out there and have the life-changing experience you came here for."

And so, I did.

I don’t have an inside voice (not even sure what that really means).

I have a movie quote for every situation in life. Although, few people ever really get my movie quotes, but that’s okay.

When I was younger I wanted to be a surfer when I grew up (funny thing is I hadn’t yet seen the ocean).

I once asked Santa for a life of leisure.

Somewhere between the jungle, the ocean and the volcanos lies my happy place.

I love the snow but hate the cold.

I could spend hours at the window watching thunderstorms and listening to the coyotes howl at the moon.

I’ll give up coffee when….oh right…never.

I have redesigned my wardrobe and my life more times than I care to count.

No matter what I’m doing, I am almost always listening to music.

I love singing and laughing out loud, even if I’m the only one in the room.

I believe that there is no greater gift for us to share than our own truth and authenticity.
